This week has been good so far:

  • I continue to enjoy participating in the WW Walk-It Challenge.  I’ve only missed one day so far, and with my schedule, that’s saying something!
  • I went to my WW meeting on Saturday, despite knowing that I was going to show a slight gain.  I am really proud of myself for going anyway, because it shows huge progress on my part.  No more sticking my head in the sand for me!
  • I was asked to participate in the WW Walk-It Blog-It Challenge, which was really exciting for me.  I even earned a “Bravo!” sticker at my WW meeting when I shared this info.  It’s cool to think that a marketing company working with WW liked this blog enough to offer me the chance to participate.  It’s a great ego stroke and it’s also a wonderful way for me to make sure I stick to it.
  • I am looking forward to a “normal” week after a week on vacation and last week’s funeral services.  Sometimes normal is absolutely perfect (and needed).

I’m really excited about my first update with the WW Walk-It Blog-It Challenge because it also includes a giveaway for 3 of my readers!  (You’ll have to read to the end of the post for the giveaway details).

This first week with the WW Walk-It Challenge has been going really well.  Here’s a snapshot of what I’ve done so far:

Day 1 (Saturday, 4/18) – I joined the challenge and walked for 15 minutes around the Rose Garden, near my house. I felt great, and only experienced a bit of stiffness/slight cramping in my calves.  I had my best time with a pace of 16:32.

Day 2 (Sunday, 4/19) – I walked around the Rose Garden again for 15 minutes, only I did it in 90 degree weather, so my  time was definitely slower at a pace of 18:52.  Still, I’m under a 20 min. mile, which is great.  The second day was better than the first in that I experienced absolutely no cramping in my calves whatsoever.  Progress!

Day 3 (Monday, 4/20) – I was supposed to walk for 20 minutes, but I have to confess, I didn’t make the walk.  Monday was another record-breaking heatwave day and it was 100 degrees!  In April!!  (Global Warming?)  Plus, it was my first day back at school after having a week off for Spring Break, and I was tired and still battling a cold.  The thing I like about the Walk-It Challenge is that it says very plainly not to worry if you miss a day now or then.  It says to continue on with the training schedule on the next day unless you miss a few days in a row, and in that case, you should start where you left off.

Off day (Tuesday, 4/21) – I am so glad Tuesday was an off day because it was another scorcher, and I was at school pretty late getting sub plans ready for the next three days (I’m taking 3 bereavement days for my grandma’s funeral services).

Day 4 (Wednesday, 4/22) -The temperatures cooled down significantly, which is a huge relief.  I didn’t go for my walk in the morning, as I had planned, but it turned out perfectly that way.  Neece and I went shopping for a black dress for me (to wear to the funeral), and we found one that looks great on me and it was only $15, originally $50!  I was telling Neece about the Challenge and she was really interested, so she asked if we could go for the walk later in the evening, around 7:30.  I told her of course, and we had a great time walking for 15 minutes at Guadalupe River Park, near our houses.  The fun part about walking with a partner is that you get to chatting and the next thing you know, you’re done with your walk. Day 3/4 was great, and I can really tell that I’m making progress in the way that I’m feeling when I walk.  I took a few pictures as we were walking tonight:

This was going to be such a cool pic of this beautiful mosaic tile compass that we found on the ground at the end of our walk, but it's so blurry.  I'd like to blame it on the fact that we were moving so fast, but it's really just that I'm not the best photographer!

Day 5 (Thursday, 4/23) – Today I went on my 20 minute walk bright and early because we have my grandmother’s Rosary later this evening, and I have so many things to do between now and then.  Walking first thing in the morning is so amazing because the air feels so fresh.  I wish I had time on weekday mornings to go for a walk before work, but since I need to leave so early, it would still be dark outside when I would go for the walk.  (Not gonna happen). Still, walking this morning made me long for summer to be here now!  This was such a great way to start my day, even on a day like this when there will be so much emotion.  Walking really helps me get centered and focus on myself, which is nice.  I decided today that each day in the summer I’m going to commit to walking for at least 15 minutes, just to start my day.  I can’t think of a better way to get the blood flowing through my veins and help me feel alive!

So that’s the beginning of my Walk-It Challenge in a nutshell.  As the weeks continue, I hope to expand my walking venues and include more snapshots of the places and things along the way. I’m also hoping to enlist some friends’ help in  taking some progress pics of me so we can all see the difference this program is surely making.  I can’t wait to see how much I improve my pace and my abilities as the weeks continue.  Some of the things I love about this program are the organization of the training schedule and information and the fact that it’s so low pressure, yet so motivating.
