Today one of my good friends (LMK) and one of my high school/FB friends (JNB) participated in the Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco. Both of them ran in the half marathon and both of them finished. I’m really proud of both of them, because running those hills in San Fran is no joke. They both also received the Tiffany pendant that serves as the finishers’ medal:
It says NWM with the Nike swoosh on one side and “I run to be…” and Tiffany & Co on the other side. (They leave room so that you can have that part engraved with a word and your run time).
I have come to believe that when you put things “out there” you begin to make them happen. So here goes…
I’ve expressed before on this blog that I want to become a runner. I want to feel the weightlessness of running. The rush of it, the release. I know that at my current weight, I’d put too much strain on my body and joints, but 100 or even 50 pounds lighter and I’d be able to begin a running program. Strike that. I WILL begin a running program. I’ll begin with my own version of C25K and then I’ll move up to a Lululemon run club (LMK did her training with them). And slowly but surely I’ll participate in 5Ks. I’ll start off with walk/jogs, move up to jog/walks, and finally reach run/walks. Then I’ll do 10Ks, and eventually I’ll work my way up to a half marathon.
The NWM allows you to finish in 6.5 hours, which is surely enough time to run/walk a half marathon if you’ve been training for it.
So this post is my vow that in 2013**, I’ll participate in the Nike Women’s Marathon. Even if I’m not at my goal weight, I’m going to do it. Because I will run to be ME.
**Oddly enough, 13 has long been my favorite number. This must be a sign.
That is an awesome goal! I hope to participate next year. So in 2013 we will both be running it hopefully! My aunt and my friend both did it today. So proud of all these women that participated today. And proud of us for making it a goal!
Absolutely. You’ve got a partner in me, girlie! We’ll definitely do it together in 2013. I love this goal.
Go get it!
That is so awesome! Good luck! You’re going to do great!
Good for you Bella! DH and I have been doing C25k and it was so helpful. I did each week twice though because I didn’t feel ready to move on and that felt perfect. I could totally keep up and it really gave me a lot of confidence. We’re all signed up for the Turkey Trot. DH is running, I’ll be walking since I’ll still be recovering from surgery. I love the Nike pendant. I hadn’t heard of that race before. I’m keeping that one in mind. Best of luck with your goal. You can totally do it!!!
You’re going to love the Turkey Trot. I did it a few years ago and it was so much fun. I’m not going to be able to do it this year, but maybe next year.
Just found you blog. Best of luck in your weightless journey and goal to be a runner/half marathoner.
