Autumn has arrived! Which means that life is back to normal – school’s in, my schedule is busy, and obligations abound. But I won’t use those as excuses to slack on my goals. The great thing about fall is that the weather is cooler, which means that those wonderful fall fashions will keep me motivated. Plus, crisp temperatures mean that it’s never “too hot” to workout. I’m going to relish my nightly cup of steaming hot tea as another way to keep my water intake up. I look forward to all those hearty, satisfying and wls-friendly soups, stews, and crockpot meals that I’ll create for myself. This year, the changing season will mark new milestones that I haven’t seen in 5, 7, 10+ years! Bring on fall 2013 – it’s time to reach new heights! Sunday weigh-ins will keep me accountable through the weekend, and will give me a positive goal to begin each new week. Throughout the fall, I’ll be giving Sunday progress updates called Fabulous Fall Weigh-Ins.
Week 16 – 4 months since surgery! In some ways it seems that these months since May 20th have flown by, but at the same time, I’ve enjoyed each moment of the journey post-op. This week was a testament that even though I’m really busy now that the school year is in full swing, I can easily make time for fitness because it’s something I really enjoy. It really is about priorities, and staying active and making it fun is definitely one of mine.
I weighed in this morning at 228.4, which is a loss of 2.6 pounds this week, and a loss of 48.6 lbs since surgery! I’ve lost a total of 86.6 pounds from my highest weight!! I am so proud of myself and all that I’ve accomplished on the scale. Huge milestones are just around the corner, and I can’t wait to reach each of them. It’s so exciting!
Almost more exciting than the numbers that I’m seeing on the scale is the image that I’m seeing reflected back at me from the mirror. Earlier this week, I donned a pair of size 20 Se7en jeans from LB and I really liked the way I looked in them (you can see the photo in my Instagram files). I’m also almost too small (!!!) to fit into two great pair of work/dress pants that Meghann gave me.
So, of course I need to hem both pair, because I’m a shorty at only 5’3″, but I’m also wondering if it’s even worth it, because both pair are pretty loose in the thighs, too. The pair on the left are Michael Kors (black with tiny white pinstripes), the right are Anne Klein (black with a tiny checkerboard pattern). Both are size 20s! I can’t believe that size 20s are almost too big!!! I think the Anne Kleins fit a bit better, so I may just hem those, since they aren’t quite as big in the waist on me. What do you think? Is it worth the effort, or should these go in the donate pile?
When people are taking photos of me, I don’t worry about the angle or how it’s going to turn out . I see the photo and am pleased with the way I’m looking. I don’t mean it to sound narcissistic, but if it does, so be it. I’m really proud of getting to this point in my life.
After WLS, many people say they can’t get used the the image in the mirror of their new body. They can’t equate the person looking back at them with the person they are. For me, it’s the not like that at all.
This person you see in the photo is the person I always knew I was. In fact, she’s still a work in progress, because the person I know I am has yet to emerge. It’s why I was always shocked when I’d see photos of myself when I weighed 315 – I never saw myself that big in my mind’s eye. I saw this girl. Or an even smaller version of her.
People compliment me and tell me that I’m glowing and that I seem so happy now. I do feel completely happy with the direction I’m moving in my life. And maybe I’m glowing because this is who I knew I could be all along.
This week was a great one for fitness, too. While I may not have done the exact workouts I’d planned last Sunday (best laid plans, right?), I did workout each day I’d planned. And when I realized that the plank challenge was going to be too much, I made a better choice. I’m loving the kettlebells, and I think it’s going to be a workout I incorporate several days a week into my normal fitness plan moving forward. It’s such a great full-body, cardio/resistance combination. And of course, I had an amazing time at yesterday’s Color Me Rad 5K. I wrote it in the post, but it bears repeating – I absolutely love walking in 5Ks! Before, when I was at my heaviest and tried to participate in 5Ks, the idea of the 5K was always better than the actual experience itself. Yesterday the experience was even better than the idea. And I adored the fact that I could have pushed myself to walk even faster. I think 5Ks are going to be my new thing! I’ve already signed up for several:
- RocknRoll “mini marathon” (5 miles) – October 6th
- SF Mermaid 5K – November 10th
- Turkey Trot – Thanksgiving morning
- Santa Run – December 15th
- Blacklight Run – February 22nd
And while it’s not a standard 5K, I’m also really interested in signing up for the SF Dirty Girl Mud Run (Feb 1st) with a group of friends. I’m a bit daunted by the obstacle course, but if I keep up my workouts, I’ll be ready for it.
All of these changes are so incredible and I just can’t describe how happy I am that I’m finally achieving all of the things that I had tried for so long to reach.
