Longtime readers of this blog may remember that at the end of every school year, my teacher friends and I all make music mixes for our MixClub. On the last teacher workday of the year we exchange CDs filled with our mixes. The mixes vary greatly, but each one shows some theme, some personal journey of the mix-maker. While it takes some effort, a bit of money, and a lot of time the idea of getting 10 or so new mixes to listen to all summer makes it worth it. The only rules are that each mix should be filled with 20 or so songs, that no artist can be repeated in a mix, and that there should be some overlying theme that is evident.
I knew my mix had to encapsulate this phenomenal year that I’ve had. I’m really proud of what I came up with, and I hope you enjoy it. I’ve been listening to the CD nonstop this summer, and everyone who’s in my car always comments on how much they like it. I created a playlist of my mix on 8tracks so that you could listen to it, too.
For so many reasons, this year has been amazing for me, and this mix reflects that feeling.
Personally, I’m finally living the life I always dreamed for myself. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s definitely been worth it. Losing the weight was the one thing I had never been able to do, and it was one of my deepest desires. Achieving this great goal has transformed me, inside and out.
Professionally, it was a thrill to get the Teacher of the Year honor during my tenth year at Prospect. In fact, that’s what gives this mix its title. I started seeing emails sent to me with T.O.Y. in the subject line, and I thought, “T.O.Y.land is the perfect way to name this awesome year that I’ve been experiencing.”
This mix is filled with upbeat, happy songs that reflect how I feel. It has songs that are deeply personal. It has songs that I use to inspire me when I’m pushing myself in my workouts. And it has a few songs that I’ve discovered more recently at the Bottle Rock Festival in Napa last weekend. In any case, this mix has been in the making throughout this wonderful year, and I hope you enjoy it.
What songs are you loving this summer? Let me know in the comments!
