For the month of December, I’ll be participating in #WEverb11. Each day gives a new prompt, each of which is a chance to reflect and look forward.

December 21: Ripple
The butterfly effect posits that a small change can ripple across whole ecosystems. Who do you credit for the small action that made all the difference in your life this year? Contributed by Zak.

This one was difficult for me to answer because I see many small actions that made a difference in my life, but if I have to choose just one thing, I guess it would be my OOTW posts.

It seems silly that posting about the week’s clothing choices on Friday would make such a big difference in my life, but hear me out.  I started to take more time to put outfits together this year, especially when school started – I carefully selected my accessories, styled my hair, and put on my makeup.  I’d always tried to look my best in these areas, but this year, something was different.

I took up the challenge of putting together really thoughtful outfits and something incredible happened along the way – I inspired myself to keep up with my weight loss, because I wanted to see myself look even better in that dress, or to be able to have that top glide over my hips instead of get stuck on them.  I saw my face getting slimmer as the weeks went by, and I was re-inspired to continue my efforts. If I was tempted to eat something that wasn’t on my plan, I tried to ask myself how it would affect that photo I was going to take tomorrow morning.

And the most important thing was that by looking at the photos and seeing the clothes on me the way the world sees them, I started to develop more of a sense of my personal style.  I’m still working on it, but I have started to recognize the clothes that are “me” and the clothes that aren’t.  And I’m not going to buy clothes that aren’t, just because they fit.  I really want to make sure that as I buy new clothes (in smaller sizes!), I only select things that exhibit my own fashion sense and style.

They say clothes don’t make the (wo)man, but I’d have to argue that this year, clothes made all the difference.

What was your “ripple” this year?

Before we get to the workweek clothes, I thought I’d share my usual weekend wear.  Depending on what I’m doing, I get more dressy with jeans and sweaters or even a dress, but if I’m just knocking around doing errands, taking Sofi for walks, meeting friends for coffee, and staying low key, I can be found in some combination like this:

Saturday, December 10thI was meeting Kim for coffee (for the first time!) and since it was chilly, and early, I decided to go casual.  She’d mentioned that she’d be in workout clothes, I figured I was safe to do so, too.

Vest: Woman Within; Long-sleeved graphic tee: LB; Yoga pants: Woman Within; Shoes: Casual Comfort

There’s one thing about these pants.  They are really, really loose on me, which is uber comfy, but which isn’t the most flattering.  I never gravitate toward tight pants, but as you can see in the photo below, maybe I need to get some that aren’t quite as roomy?  Since they’re just for the weekends or after work, I don’t mind that they’re huge, but eventually I know I should get more form-fitting ones.  Maybe once I’m in a different size.

Reaaaaaallllllyyyyyy wide leg. But I do like how "flowy" they are.

Ready to meet a new friend for coffee!

This week at school the ASB decided to make it really fun by thinking of different themed dress days. They also had corresponding activities at break and lunch, which was fun for the kids. I took part in almost every day, and I loved it because it meant I had a week’s worth of outfits already all planned out. No guesswork! Luckily, too, I had enough “holiday” clothes to wear.

Monday, December 12th: PJ Day.  Now I was originally going to wear this:

Some of my winter pjs, from Woman Within; my (pre-makeup) outfit for pj day at school. Did I dare?

I know that these jammies are so cute and would’ve been a huge hit at school (They have knit scarves, hats, and mittens all over them and they say “warm and cuddly” on the top).  The problem was, since it was a Monday, I wasn’t sure how many of the kids would remember this dress-up day.  And I didn’t want to be the only one who did it.  I know that seemed like such a high school worry, but when your job is standing in front of people giving information, you do worry about what you’re going to wear and how it looks.  The pants were thin and showed my flub, and I wasn’t feeling as confident in them.  Plus, it was really cold that day, and I knew that if I wore them, I’d be freezing in my classroom all day long.

So I totally copped out.  I went with sweats, because people do wear them to bed and they were much warmer.  I felt better in them, and they were different in their own way.  The Chicago sweatshirt has the exact color of dark rose of the pants.  So I wore this:

No, that isn't a camel toe! Those pants are sort of loose too, and they gather. Still, not the best pose.

When I got to school, tons of kids (and a few teachers) had the pjs on, so I definitely should have worn mine.  Lesson learned.

Tuesday, December 13th: Holiday Color Day.  We were supposed to wear either green/red or blue/white or whatever colors were in the particular December holiday we celebrated.  I was so happy, because it meant that I could wear my Quaker Factory shirt that I got from QVC.  (OK, that statement made me sound 75 years old!). Since bling is in, and this is a holiday shirt, I don’t mind wearing it at all, even though Quaker Factory also makes some sweaters and shirts that could later be worn at an ugly Christmas sweater party.  😛

I took this in the bathroom to show the shirt in good lighting.

Wednesday, December 14th: Decorate Yourself Day.  The directions said, come dressed as you would decorate a tree.  Wear ornaments, lights, tinsel – whatever you want.  Instead, I opted to wear my other QF shirt.  Hey, I have two and you can’t wear them any other time of year.  Why not?

One important thing that I want to note is that last year when I bought these Quacker Factory shirts, they were snug on me and I worried about how I looked in them.  As you can see from these photos, they’re loose now.  And next year, they won’t fit at all!  Love that!!!!!!!

(I skipped Thursday because we had our Journalism deadline, and we all wear our Journalism sweatshirts on those days).

Friday, December 16th: Character Day.  The directions said to dress like your favorite holiday character – Santa, an elf, Rudolf, etc.  I chose to wear a Christmas hat and my star/snowflake shirt.

Bring on Winter Break!!

And with that, I am now on Winter Break!!  It was fun to have the dress-up days and make it through one of the longest weeks of the year.

Which outfit did you like best?

Since autumn officially began last Friday, I thought I’d make this post all about my nod at the new season.

Sunday: Getting ready to head to yoga. I love this top because it’s so fun, plus it’s really soft, lightweight, and comfy. Torrid has the best graphic tees! I just wish they were more affordable. The gray pants are more form-fitting than the ones I normally wear. The whole outfit was fairly form-fitting, and I felt comfortable in it.

Wonder Woman Tee - Torrid; Gray yoga pants - Avenue; Flip flops - Target

Monday: I love this sweater because it means that I’m losing weight! When I first bought it late last summer (2010), it was very tight on me, especially around the stomach. Now it just glides over that area! The sweater is perfect because it’s really thin, so it can be layered as the weather gets cooler. It was nice that today was more of a true autumn day. Sorry for the poor lighting – My bedroom is really dark when I’m taking these shots in the morning.

Cowl neck short-sleeved sweater - LB; cropped black pants - Avenue; Shoes - Clarks

My new Clarks (UnMemoir).

Tuesday: And just like that, the weather around here turned hot (damn you, Indian summer!!).  I decided to wear this dress because it’s cute and cool.  I love polka dots because they’re just so classic.  I got a lot of compliments throughout the day, which was fun.

Side view, just to show my shape. Sorry for the poor lighting, these are taken before 7am.

Wednesday: It was even hotter on this day than the previous one, so I wanted to stay cool and  comfortable.  And I guess I was in the mood for another day of black & white.

Top: Dress Barn; Palazzo Pants: Target; Shoes: Macy's

I bought this bracelet in 1995 in Sorrento, Italy. I thought the filigree when nicely with the top.

Just like last week, Thursday was college tshirt day and Friday was a casual school pride day.  I do have good news to report, though.  Both pairs of jeans that I wore each of those days fit me well.  The first pair was from Avenue, called Divine Denim, and they were much too small when I first bought them.  There were still rather snug on Thursday, but I could button them, and they looked good with the long tshirt I had on.  Once they’re a tiny bit looser, they will be really “divine” because they are so light and comfy.  Sometimes jeans can be too stiff or binding, but these feel almost like jeggings (although they’re not).  Today I wore my absolute favorite jeans, from Style & Co at Macy’s, and they fit great.  When I bought them the other week, they were fairly tight, but today there was plenty of “breathing room.”

Tonight the weather is turning quite windy and a bit chilly, and there is rain in the forecast in the coming days, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that we’re done with the hot weather.

Happy Fashion Friday!
