1. This is my last Friday of summer vacation. 😦 This time next Friday I’ll be at a “Welcome Back” meeting for the start of the new school year for our first teacher workday. My plan for the day is to spend it the way I’ve spent the entire summer – a combo of fitness and fun. Fitness: a session on my home elliptical, walking the dogs with my dad, and swimming some laps. Fun: a bit of shopping (just took advantage of Victoria Secret’s most recent email offer), reading poolside, and a possible date later tonight.
2. This week has been a very social one, getting together with lots of friends that I’ve known since high school, which I’ve loved. That’s one of the huge distinctions between my life now and my life before I lost all the weight. I was always a social, extroverted person, but I often felt a bit depressed about the way I looked. Not to mention the clothing issue – I always tried to look my best, but nothing ever fit the way it should’ve. I can’t count the number of times I turned down an invitation or made some excuse just so that I wouldn’t have to deal with all of that. Now, I have tons of clothes in the closet that look great and make me feel fantastic. Now, I am happy and excited when someone suggests going out. I’m actually getting teary-eyed thinking about what a huge switch this is. Just one more thing to be so grateful for about this new life.
3. I’ve been getting into Instagram a lot this summer, as you can tell by my feed on the right. I post daily check-ins for my workouts and lots of pics of other things that just strike my fancy. While I’ve been off, it’s been easy and really fun. This month I’m participating in three different photo-a-day contests, and I’m hoping I can keep up with them once school starts. If you haven’t joined a photo-a-day contest, I righly recommend them…maybe not just three in one month. Still, the contests are a great way for me to stay focused on fitness, get motivated, and inspire myself and others with all the photos.
4. In anticipation of the school year starting in about a week, I spent a good portion of the day yesterday mapping out my school year workout plans in my iCal. Since I have a morning prep period on my B days (which means I can get to school a bit later than normal) I’m going to fit in early morning fitness classes at the gym several times a week. The live Insanity class that I tried a few weeks ago is now offered Tuesday mornings at 5:45am, and I’ll be there whenever Tuesday is a B day. I’m also going to spinning at least once a week at 5:45am. I’m still undecided about what I’ll do on my A days, when I need to leave my house by 7am. Towards the end of last year I was waking up at 4:30am to do a morning workout, but that is just SO early. Although it’s not ideal, I think I may go back to afternoon workouts on A days, because I really did enjoy them and they’re a great way to relieve the stress of the day.
5. Kandis, one of the TIUgirls, mentioned a week or two ago that she had started reading Gabrielle Bernstein’s May Cause Miracles. Who doesn’t want “subtle shifts for radical change and unlimited happiness” right? The reviews and general internet buzz about the book was so positive that I thought I’d give it a try. Have you read it? What are your thoughts? What book are you reading right now? Let me know in the comments.
That’s my Friday Five – I’m off to enjoy some pool time.
Happy Friday! I hope you have a wonderful weekend, full of fun and exciting adventures.
We’ve hit the time in the summer that is both a blessing and a curse for me. A blessing because celebrating special events with friends and family is always fun. A curse because these memory-making events always come with indulgent foods and drinks. Still, I feel lucky to have so much to celebrate over the course of these two weeks:
Italian Heritage Night at the SF Giants (Tuesday night)
Dinner out with a friend for my birthday (Tuesday)
My birthday (next Wednesday)
4th of July
My friend’s annual 5th of July party
At each of these events, I’m going to make the best choices possible. For example, Wednesday night at my dad’s birthday dinner, which we had at a local bocce court and restaurant, I ordered steamed clams and mussels in a white wine/tomato/garlic broth. Healthy and very delicious, but we also had red wine. Which is fine, and wouldn’t affect my weight loss, except that I had a beer at the Giants game the night before, and I had cucumber sangria at my party last night. See what I mean? None of these choices alone are bad; but together they make it hard to lose weight.
Which is honestly why I didn’t weigh in on Wednesday. I’d had an Italian sausage (no bun), beer, and a bit of kettle corn the night before at the game, and I knew it would put me up on the scale, even if it is just water weight.
Now I’m not saying that during this next week and a half I’m going to throw everything out the window and eat with wild abandon while lazing around at home inactive. That’s just not me anymore. I’m still making good choices, I’m still eating small portions, and I’m still working out as much as ever. But at this point in my weight loss journey, indulging a bit and working out equals maintaining my weight, not losing.
Which I’m fine with – until July 6th. I’ve decided that I’m perfectly happy to maintain my weight loss for the next week or so. I’m actually really happy with the way I look and feel right now. I’m proud of all that I’ve accomplished and enjoy seeing the person who looks back at me in the mirror. But I still weigh more than I’d like to, so I’m not quite ready to call this my goal weight. Not just yet.
So beginning on July 6th I’m going to get back to my weight loss mode. I want to drop another 30 pounds, and while I know it’s going to be a lot harder to do it now that I’m at this weight, I know I can do anything I put my mind to. Those 30 pounds aren’t going to come off in just one summer, but I can lose 1/3 – 1/2 of them if I get back to being a bit stricter with my food choices.
Which is not to say that I can’t have fun this summer, but I want to keep my ultimate goal in mind. My journey isn’t over just yet, and I’m excited to continue on with it after this brief rest stop.
As you guys know, I’ve been loving the ToneItUp‘s workouts since mid-January. I’ve done them 5 days a week, every week since I began, only missing while I was on vacation in Hawaii. (If you haven’t checked them out, I highly recommend you do. It’s completely free, and they have a fun community, full of supportive, motivating people who cheer on every workout you post about).
They’re about to launch their new #bikiniseries this coming Monday, which will run for 8 weeks, until the official start of summer. Karena and Katrina put so much into the daily workouts they design, and the best part is, the whole thing is free. All you need to do is sign up for the #bikiniseries and you’ll get reminder emails, weekly workouts, fun giveaways, yummy recipes, contests, etc.
I like the approach that Tone It Up takes toward living a healthy lifestyle. Not only do they include workouts and nutrition, but they also concentrate on mindset. Take yesterday’s challenge, for example:
The challenge asked participants to create their own summer must-do list. Beyond workouts and eating right, what were things that we wanted to make sure to fit in this summer? I loved this! Any time I can make a list and get creative with my summer plans, I’m all for it! As a teacher, lots of people ask me, what do you do all summer long? My answer is always the same – anything I want to! 🙂 This summer, I really want to concentrate on enjoying each and every day. I didn’t include all of my plans on my list, but I did include most of the things I’m hoping to do:
The photo I used is one that was taken for me by a Danish tourist while I was riding my bike at Kailua Beach on Oahu. She worried that I would be upset that so much of it was in the shadows, but I assured her that I actually liked the way it turned out. It was the perfect photo to use for this assignment because it has an artsy feel right off the bat. I like the way I’m in silhouette with the bike, but the ocean and the beach are in the bright sun in the background.
I thought I’d elaborate a bit on each of these summer plans…
Mid-morning swims: One of my favorite parts of summer is being able to swim at the pool at my parents’ townhouse complex. More often than not, if I get there by 10:30 or 11, I have the entire place to myself, and I’m free to swim laps to my heart’s content. Sometimes my dad and I meet there and swim together, and it’s a nice way for us to connect with each other as we update each other on the latest family happenings while we’re drying off in the sun. It’s also a great time for me to be alone with my thoughts and just let go of all worries and stress. Swimming really soothes me, and I can’t wait to start my almost-daily swims.
Daily doses of laughter: Whether it’s retelling a funny story, joking with my nieces, or watching Sofi do something goofy, I want to appreciate all the little moments of laughter that are part of my daily life this summer. Laughter is good for the soul and the spirit, and I want to make sure I’m enjoying it all the time.
Hawaii-themed party: Since I had such a fun time in Hawaii, I figured it would be fun to have a party with a Hawaiian theme. I’m still deciding if I’ll combine it with a Silpada party that I’m planning to have, or if it will be more of a traditional party. Either way, I have plenty of fun outfits to choose from.
Coffee chats: I live really close to Starbucks (doesn’t everyone?!), so close in fact, that I can walk there with ease. It’s become a habit with three or four of my friends that we meet up there and catch up about all that’s going on in our lives. It’s the perfect place to get together because I can get a calorie-free passion iced tea, or a caffeine kick with an iced cinnamon dolce misto. As far as I’m concerned, coffee is the perfect drink any time of day, so it fits well with a more carefree summer schedule.
SF (and SJ) Giants games: I love supporting my Giants, and plan to go to as many games as I can afford to this summer. One that I know I’ll go to is the Italian Night at the Giants, where a really large group of family and friends all get together. It’s so much fun! The tickets at AT&T Park are expensive, so lately my friends and I have been opting to go to the SJ Giants games. Not only are they ridiculously inexpensive (less than $10 per game), but they’re a lot of fun. Very family-friendly, with lots of activities for the kids to participate in between innings. My friend Di and I are even signing up to do the Giant 5K, which gets us into the game the evening of the race. I’m actually going to an SJ Giants game this Friday with my sister and nieces, which will be tons of fun. Bring on the baseball!!
Going on dates!: I’m actually really looking forward to this one. Assuming of course there are men to go on dates with. I was only on Match.com for about 2 months back in November/December, and I have to say, I was pretty underwhelmed. I got lots of winks, emails, and nudges, but when it came time for the guys to just make the move and ask for my number so we could move it to the next level of texting/talking on the phone and then hopefully soon afterward meeting up, they never pulled the trigger. Even when I directly said, “here’s my number, I’d love to figure out a time for us to meet up for coffee or something.” They disappeared quick. I’m not one to go into a long and drawn out relationship online via email, or text, for that matter. If you’re interested, you think I’m cute, you want to get to know me better, then let’s do that – let’s meet up and see if we hit it off. Because we can have all the chemistry in the world online, we won’t know if we’re really going to be attracted to each other until we meet up. I’m hoping that this time of year will be easier to connect than it was around the holidays. One of the major takeaways I had from my trip to Hawaii was that I’m really ready to be in a relationship, even a more casual one. Hopefully I have a bit of romance in store this summer.
Leash-free beach trips: Last summer I had a blast taking Sofi to a lesser-known beach where she could run off leash. We have the best time when we go – she loves running along the shore, but is afraid to get too close to the water, so I don’t have to worry much about the waves taking her. We both get in a great walk, we get some sunshine, and I get to read and relax. What could be better? Besides just that particular dog-friendly beach, I also hope to hit the other local beaches often this summer.
Long walks w/ Sofi: I take Sofi on walks almost every single day, but in the summer it’s so nice to be able to wake up and take a nice, long walk before the temperature heats up too much. I love exploring all the different streets around my neighborhood with Sofi. She loves when I find new places for our walks, so that’s definitely on my to-do summer list.
Reading: I’m not off to the best start so far this year in terms of my reading goal on Goodreads, but I did get quite a bit of reading time in when I was on vacation in Hawaii. My goal for the summer is to fit in at least an hour a day of reading time. I enjoy reading so much, and I want to make it a priority during the time of year when I have so few responsibilities pulling my focus from the things I enjoy.
Riding roller coasters: This is a huge one for me! It will definitely be its own blog post when it happens because it will be a major NSV. I love going on roller coasters – the wilder and faster the better. I haven’t been on one in I can’t even remember how long because of the time that I got on one and almost had to get off because the safety bar wasn’t going to close. I pleaded with the kid running the ride to let me stay on it, and he did. After that I only got bigger and knew that roller coaster were way out of reach. I didn’t ever want to risk the embarrassment of being asked to get off before I was able to ride the ride. So, this summer I plan on going to Great America and the Santa Cruz Boardwalk to ride as many roller coasters as I can. Can’t wait!!
Family BBQs: I love grilling any day of the week, but getting together with my family and friends and sharing a meal as easy as BBQing is something really look forward to. Sometimes it’s as simple as bringing my meat over to their house for an impromptu BBQ; other times it’s a more planned affair, like for Father’s Day or 4th of July. Either way, I can’t wait to fire up the grill and get cooking!
Cocktails: Summertime is a great time to relax and let go a bit. While I usually only drink on special occasions because the alcohol has empty calories, there is something to be said for enjoying a nice glass of white wine or a Swirl (local peeps will know what time talking about) with friends. Any afternoon or evening becomes more of a celebration when you add a cocktail.
Bike rides: I love riding my cruiser around, and now that more of my friends have bikes, too, I hope to get out and go on rides all summer long. Half Moon Bay, Morgan Hill, and everywhere in between. I love the freedom I feel when I’m riding my bike, the sun shining on my face, the wind in my hair. There’s nothing in the world like it.
Backyard lounging: I have this great Adirondack chair that I bought a few years ago that’s nicely weathered now. I adore sitting in it and enjoying the peace and serenity of my backyard. Looking at the garden and seeing the flowers and trees. Watching Sofi cavorting in the grass. Reading, listening to music, or just trying to keep cool on a warm night. Sounds perfect to me.
There are a lot more things I could add to my list, but I’ll save those up until I have enough to create an entirely new one. This was such a fun exercise, and I’m really glad the Tone It Up girls gave this assignment. It put me in a great mood and gave me some inspiration to get through these last weeks of my school year.
Now that you’ve read my list of how I’m going to create my summer, I’d like to challenge you to write your own list. Either in the comments or by joining the TIU challenge. Post a pic on Instagram with your list. Tweet about it. Write your own blog post. It was a fun activity that really put me in the mindset to enjoy myself this summer, and I can’t wait to read about your plans.
Happy Monday, Everyone! For the first time in three weeks, I’m actually at work on a Monday. Go figure! But since I had to be at school until 9:30pm on Friday night to chaperone a play, only to turn around and be back at 7:15am on Saturday to proctor the SAT, I think taking the last couple of Mondays off was justified. Plus, October is a l-o-n-g month with no holidays, so most teachers take a few days here and there to break it up a bit.

FMM: Winning the Lottery
What’s the first thing you would do for yourself if you won 100 million dollars? Note: this question is specifically for you…what would you do for fun after the family and the bills and the obvious stuff was taken care of?
OMG! Kenlie, I am so glad that you posted this fun topic. With budget cuts in an already meager teacher’s salary, I feel like I never have enough money. Just last week, our local ABC station was running a contest to win $49,000 (tied to the Thursday Night Football game the 49ers played). Unfortunately, I didn’t win. But here’s a chance to dream a little bit.
In no particular order….
I’d buy a house for myself. In fact, I might even buy the duplex that my sister and I live in. I don’t need some McMansion, and I abhor moving, so I’d be very comfortable living here for the foreeseable future. It would be nice, though, not to have to worry about rent/mortgage payments.
After paying off my VW Convertible Beetle, I’d buy a few more cars.
First, I’d get a Lexus RX so that I could use it for trips skiing (which I’ve never done, but would love to try) and to cart my bike here and there on the weekends. I like this rich bronze color because it’s so unusual.
I’d also want to buy a 1964 Dodge Dart. My mom had one when I was little, and I loved that car. Plus, it would be such a cool car to drive around in once in a while. (When weather wasn’t a factor).
Moving past cars, I’d purchase tons of clothes from Anthropologie, Nordstrom, Ann Taylor Loft, Banana Republic, etc. A few items I’d pick up…
Of course I’d buy all sorts of beautiful, ridiculous shoes.
Who am I really kidding? More like this:
I’d also like to buy some signature jewelry from Cartier or Tiffany.
And I’d travel…
It would be so fun to be able to buy anything I want, anytime I want. To go wherever my heart desired, by whatever means I felt like. The security of not worrying about money and being able to enjoy my family and friends until the end of my days. Ahhhhhh….it’s fun to dream, isn’t it?
What would you spend your money on???
Now it’s your turn to share. Don’t forget to go back to Kenlie’s blog to link up in the comments!
Happy Monday, Everyone! Today marks my first day of school, and despite not being ready for my summer vacation to be over (I’m NEVER ready for it to be over), I’m really looking forward to this new school year. I have come to believe that attitude makes a huge difference, so I’m going into this year with a really positive outlook. My goal is to think before I speak, take a breath before responding, and to be as patient as possible. While most people enjoy my quick wit and snappy retorts, I know that my style isn’t for everyone, so I’m going to ease my students into getting to know me by trying a kinder, gentler approach.
The hardest part of today is leaving poor Sofi all day. The poor thing doesn’t know what hit her, and has NO idea why we woke up at 5am today!

FMM: Inappropriate Questions
1. Will you vote in the upcoming presidential election? Absolutely. It’s a privilege that people in other countries die for.
2. Do you say curse words? I do, although I really watch myself at work. Sometimes nothing quite fits like a good 4-letter word, but in most cases I try to find another word.
3. Have you ever kissed a stranger? Yes, both at a club on the dance floor in my younger days, and at a luau in Hawaii (when everyone went around kissing the entire group).
4. If you could choose to meet only one fellow blogger in person right now who would you choose? This one is no-brainer for me – Scale Warfare. She and I have become such great friends over the years, even though we’ve never met in person. I’d love to meet her and just give her a hug. If you haven’t checked out her blog, you should. She’s lost 120 lbs! Very inspiring.
5. What is the most inappropriate pick-up line that anyone has ever used on you? Oh, I have had so many over the years it would be difficult to pick just one. Guys really need to get better game.
6. Do you sing in the shower? Oddly enough, no. I do my best thinking in the shower. But I do hold entire concerts in my car, my kitchen, or around the house while cleaning.
7. How often do you get drunk? I don’t get drunk if I can avoid it. I’ve been at that point many times over the years, but I hate feeling out of control. Lately I haven’t even been drinking at all, avoiding the unnecessary calories.
8. Have you ever been fired from a job? No.
9. Were you popular in high school? I wasn’t in the mean girl, popular group, but I was friendly with them. I had a core group of friends whom I could spill my inner most secrets to, but I was also friends with people from all the different cliques at my school. I’d say that everyone in my graduating class knew me, although I should point out that I went to private school, so there were only about 120 of us.
10. Who is your current celebrity crush? Johnny Depp, George Clooney, or Joe Manganiello, to name a few.
Now it’s your turn to share. Don’t forget to go back to Kenlie’s blog to link up in the comments!
For the month of December, I’ll be participating in #WEverb11. Each day gives a new prompt, each of which is a chance to reflect and look forward.
December 29: Gush
Begin to create a plan for “My Friends Day Out 2012” – tell us what you envision.Contributed by Julie Jordan Scott.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This prompt is a really fun one for me and one that I hope to actually put to use. Scale Warfare and I have been friends since she left her first comment on my blog, back on March 19, 2009. That was 384 comments ago. (Yes, I checked). In the 2 1/2 years since we first connected, we’ve become amazing sources of support for each other. As I’ve said many, many times before, SW is one of my best friends. Yet we’ve never met in person.
Well that’s changing in 2012. We’ve decided the only city ready for our first meetup is Vegas. Summer 2012. Exact date to be decided.
So this Friends’ Day Out plan is for Vegas, Baby:
(We’ll arrive in Vegas at some point on Friday, and we’ll spend that first night talking, drinking, gambling, and who knows? This plan will be for the next day, our first full day in Vegas).
Morning:
An early morning (which in Vegas could mean 11am!) walk along the strip, taking in the scene.
Breakfast at one of the many buffets. As long as there are Bloody Mary’s I don’t care which.
Pool time. It’s bound to be HOT in Vegas in the summer, but if we can handle it, getting a few rays earlier in the day would be great.
Riding the roller coasters – this is a significant NSV, because before we each lost weight, we wouldn’t have fit into the rides.
Checking out the beautiful hotels – Wynn, Bellagio, Venetian, etc.
Some spa time.
Evening:
Drinks at a hotspot lounge. It’s been 10 years since I was in Vegas, so I need recommendations. At that time, I loved the rum bar at Mandalay Bay, but I have no idea if that’s even there still.
Dinner at a 4-star restaurant.
A show – Cirque du Soleil, comedy, music – depending on who’s playing when we’re there.
Dancing at another hotspot – one that’s not overrun with wannabe’s. Just a place were we can have fun and let loose.
Gambling.
Repeat, repeat, repeat.
The most important part of the trip is that we’ll be meeting up for the first time, the rest of it is just icing on the cake. I’m really looking forward to our trip!
Another fun-filled, action-packed weekend, which I really enjoyed.
I am so glad that I started doing the household cleaning and chores a little each day so that I could have the entire weekend to have fun and enjoy myself. I’m going to do my best to continue this practice in the fall, although once school starts and I’m back to working full time, it’s going to be a challenge.
Friday I finally broke out of a funky mood that I’d been in for a couple of days. The morning started with a trip to the vet that changed everything – now Sofi is able to go on walks, to the dog park, and to get groomed. She can go anywhere – training classes (which I need to sign us up for soon), doggie boutiques, Pet Food Express, friends’ houses, etc. It’s been a long time in coming and I’m so happy that we’ll be able to do more things out and about. She’s still learning how to go for a walk because I’m determined that she learns loose-leash walking, which is more difficult to train at first, but so worth the extra effort. After all the puppy fun during the day, I spent the an hour going to Friday night Zumba, which was a blast! I’m definitely going back, weekly. .
Saturday we celebrated my niece’s 4th birthday with a family lunch and it was nice to see how grown up my nieces are getting. It’s always nice to spend some time with my family, and as a few of you point out, I’m so lucky to have them all so close. No matter how great your friends are, and I have some fantastic friends, there’s nothing like the love and support you can get from family. At least in my experience.
Saturday evening I took Sofi on another walk, but this time I decided that it was a good idea for the whole gang to come along. And by “whole gang” I mean: Minnie, LC’s 2-year old dog whom Sofi idolizes and adores; my nieces, who are eight and four; and my sister. They say that sometimes you have to learn from experience, and this was no different:
I think Sofi’s love of Minnie gets her way too excited and distracted from the task at hand, namely, walking with a leash. So, until she masters that, I think we’ll be going solo. Which is actually just fine, because walking the dog is such a great way to bond, and I relish my Sofi time.
The rest of the time on Saturday was a combination of a bit of freelance work, light cooking and meal planning, and a much-needed at home facial courtesy of Queen Helene’s Mint Julep Mud Masque.
Sunday my mom and I made a trip to the farmers market, which was long overdue. I haven’t been in months because of my wacky eating plans, and I can’t tell you how great it was to peruse the aisles of summer fruits and veggies and be able to buy anything I wanted. I ended up buying some peaches, dino kale, beautiful variegated summer squash, and some delicious blackberries.
After the farmers market, Mom and I headed to the international market near our house to pick up some Baharat seasoning blend that we needed for this delicious recipe Eating Well Magazine tweeted about this morning. Turkish lamb and eggplant kabobs? Delicious. The recipe actually calls for you to make your own Baharat spice mix, but since we have the luxury of having quite a few Middle Eastern markets just minutes from our house, we figured we’d save ourselves some time and money and get the pre-made spice blend. My mom plans to make it for dinner on Tuesday for her and my dad and I’m going to make it this coming weekend for LC. I’ll definitely report back and let you know how good it was. On a side note, have you guys seen Eating Well magazine? It is phenomenal, and I knew noting about it until Scale Warfare gave me a subscription for Christmas last year. I love it!!
After all the food shopping, it was time to eat lunch, play with Sofi, and get some more freelance work done. Then LC and I went to Restorative Yoga, which was a brand-new and very relaxing experience. After the class, I was calm but hungry, so I put together a fairly quick meal that featured my farmers market summer squash, which were divine:
Summer squash, TJ’s turkey meatballs, and TJ’s harvest grains medley. Just hearty enough to fill me up while keeping things light.
All in all a really wonderful weekend that I hope to replay at least 4 more times before the summer ends. 🙂
Even though Sofi has her own blog, where I write all about our experiences together, I thought that since today she’s moving into a whole new stage of her life, I’d highlight a few things on this blog. Just in case you needed a cute puppy fix for today. 🙂
Today Sofi is 4 months old, which is exciting for so many reasons. Now she can go on walks, visit the dog park, get groomed, and do pretty much anything we decide we’d like to. It’s opened up a whole new world for her, which is great for me, too. Now we an really have fun and we’re not limited to only staying around the house or the backyard. I can bring her out and about, and I think she’s going to enjoy being a social puppy.
Yesterday Sofi also took her first car ride, which she loved. Then when we got home and I thought she was just going to chill out for a while, she decided it was frolickin’ Friday. If you do nothing else, please watch that video – I guarantee it will make you giggle.
I hope you guys have a fantastic weekend – I have some fun plans of my own that I’ll catch you up on in a post tomorrow. Let’s just say that I plan to make the most of each day of the weekend!!! I hope you do, too.
Here’s a little something from Lulu & me to get you in the spirit. I used these photos for this year’s Christmas card, and since I can’t send each of you an individual card, I thought this would be a nice alternative. Plus, you can enjoy some music from the Glee Christmas album. I hope everyone has a happy, healthy, and joy-filled Christmas!
