Happy Monday! I can’t believe that today marks one week since my weight loss surgery.  It’s amazing to me how much my body has gone through, and recovered from, in that short time.  I’m feeling good this morning, and expect that by next Monday for my 2-week post op appointment, I’ll be feeling even better!  Now, let’s get to this week’s FMM.

If you’ve taken part in FMM then you know the rules. If you’re new, please take a moment to answer this week’s question on your own blog then add your link in the comments section at: www.alltheweigh.com so we can all see your FMM questions and answers. Please invite your blog readers to add their links here too so everyone has to opportunity to be seen. The idea is to connect with other awesome bloggers so take a moment to post your own FMM post and comment on a couple of other posts. Now it’s time for this week’s topic!

FMM: Summer Fun

This week’s topic is especially fun for me to answer because my summer has officially started!

1.  What is your favorite summer fruit?  I love all summer fruits, but I have to agree with Kenlie that watermelon is at the top of the list.  Nothing is more refreshing, is it?

2.  Do you know how to swim?  Absolutely! Swimming is my favorite way to exercise in the summer.  As soon as I’m cleared to swim, I plan on being at the pool every single day to get an early-afternoon swim in. Can’t wait!

3.  Do you prefer sun or snow?  Living in the Bay Area, I don’t have to deal with the snow, and have only been in it once or twice in my life.  So, I definitely prefer the sun.

4.  What temperature do you like most inside your home?  Right around 70 is ideal, but I keep the A/C to 74 to conserve.

5.  Is it humid where you live?  Not usually.  Once in awhile we get a weird tropical system that makes it fairly humid, but most of the time it’s extremely pleasant.

6. What is your favorite food to put on the grill?  Most often you’ll some sort of fish on my grill, but I love grilling everything – steaks, chicken, lamb, tofu, and of course, veggies.

7. Do you prefer to wear a one-piece  or two-piece swim suit?  I wear a swim dress to help conceal my thighs; it’s two pieces, but it covers everything. I’m actually looking forward to buying some new swimsuits this summer (since the ones I have are going to get too big!).

8.  What is your favorite summer drink?  There are so many drinks I enjoy in summer – iced coffee made from the morning’s leftovers, iced tea, but SkinnyGirl margaritas are right up there, if we’re celebrating.

9.  Do you prefer the pool or the ocean? I prefer to swim in the pool but I love going to the ocean to enjoy the views.

I took this in early spring in Half Moon Bay

10.  What are you looking forward to most over the summer? I’m looking forward to this being a summer of transformation for me.  I plan to kick my workouts into overdrive and really see how much weight I can lose.  I’m looking forward to the new me emerging.  Plus, I can’t wait for all the fun, social events that the summer brings.

Now it’s your turn to answer the questions! And also be sure to go back to Kenlie’s blog and leave a link to your FMM post in the comments! I really encourage you to comment on as many people’s posts as you can – I’ve met some fantastic people through FMM. You never know who you’ll meet today.

For the month of December, I’ll be participating in #WEverb11. Each day gives a new prompt, each of which is a chance to reflect and look forward.

December 29: Gush

Begin to create a plan for “My Friends Day Out 2012” – tell us what you envision.Contributed by Julie Jordan Scott.

This prompt is a really fun one for me and one that I hope to actually put to use.  Scale Warfare and I have been friends since she left her first comment on my blog, back on March 19, 2009.  That was 384 comments ago.  (Yes, I checked).  In the 2 1/2 years since we first connected, we’ve become amazing sources of support for each other.  As I’ve said many, many times before, SW is one of my best friends.  Yet we’ve never met in person.

Well that’s changing in 2012.  We’ve decided the only city ready for our first meetup is Vegas.  Summer 2012.  Exact date to be decided.

So this Friends’ Day Out plan is for Vegas, Baby:

(We’ll arrive in Vegas at some point on Friday, and we’ll spend that first night talking, drinking, gambling, and who knows?  This plan will be for the next day, our first full day in Vegas).

  • An early morning (which in Vegas could mean 11am!) walk along the strip, taking in the scene.
  • Breakfast at one of the many buffets. As long as there are Bloody Mary’s I don’t care which.
  • Pool time.  It’s bound to be HOT in Vegas in the summer, but if we can handle it, getting a few rays earlier in the day would be great.

  • Shopping.  Hello Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace.
  • Riding the roller coasters – this is a significant NSV, because before we each lost weight, we wouldn’t have fit into the rides.
  • Checking out the beautiful hotels – Wynn, Bellagio, Venetian, etc.
  • Some spa time.

  • Drinks at a hotspot lounge.  It’s been 10 years since I was in Vegas, so I need recommendations. At that time, I loved the rum bar at Mandalay Bay, but I have no idea if that’s even there still.
  • Dinner at a 4-star restaurant.
  • A show – Cirque du Soleil, comedy, music – depending on who’s playing when we’re there.
  • Dancing at another hotspot – one that’s not overrun with wannabe’s.  Just a place were we can have fun and let loose.
  • Gambling.
  • Repeat, repeat, repeat.

The most important part of the trip is that we’ll be meeting up for the first time, the rest of it is just icing on the cake.  I’m really looking forward to our trip!

As you may have guessed from today’s earlier post, I was feeling quite trepidatious about going to the pool by myself.  I was worried that there would be a pool full of people, or worse still, a bunch of people lounging poolside, ready and able to oogle my fat self in a bathing suit.

In order to retain as much dignity as possible, I decided to don a strange get-up for the pool.

Does the shaky picture give away my nerves? :P

Does the shaky picture give away my nerves? 😛

Yes, those are my red, capri yoga-ish pants underneath my full-skirted swimsuit.  I had never thought of putting the skirt on the outside of the pants before, but it worked.  And I have to say, it didn’t look too crazy.  It sort of seemed like I had on a long tunic-length top, well sort of.

I drove up to the pool and low and behold, my fears were warrant-less: download-1 There was (almost) no one there! There was one girl, who was sitting in the shade reading a magazine, but she seemed friendly, and (I hoped) non-judgmental.

After finding a nice spot in the sun, I got in the pool and started to swim laps.  It was a great thing!  I felt so free and so happy; all my fears were put to the side, and I just enjoyed the moment.  My form sucks, but I can keep myself afloat, which is the most important thing.  I think all in all, I did about 17-20 laps.  I started counting, but lost count after a while.

After I was getting a bit winded from all of the laps (with a bit of power doggy-paddling thrown in for good measure), I got out and started sunning myself poolside, with a magazine and some tunes in my iPod.

download-3 I felt so good!  It didn’t seem that warm anymore, after getting out of the pool.  I read and listened to some music and let the rest of the world sink away.

That is, until two perfect-bodied 20-somethings came through the pool gate, and the InnerFatGirl thought that I must look like a beached whale laying there.  She decided to take this picture:

download-2 Ugh, fat, white legs looking worse because the fat is spread out as I lay there.  “Well, so what InnerFatGirl,” I said, “this is considered a before shot, and now I’m going to get back in the pool and do some more laps, just to burn a few more calories” (mentally sticks tongue out at InnerFatGirl).

I’ve discovered that nothing motivates me like the image of my thunder thighs in a bathing suit!

I’m not being self-deprecating.  Well, ok, I AM, but I’m not feeling sorry for myself.  (Well, maybe a little).  The thing is, today at the pool was a positive experience overall.  I had to get out of my own head (and shut InnerFatGirl up!) and just do it.  I know no one probably gave me much of a second look.  Sure, they may have thought to themselves, “wow, that girl needs to lose some weight,” but they also probably thought, “good for her for swimming laps and getting some exercise.”  Regardless, I’m not really worried about them and what they think.  Ok, so I did leave once the pool started filling up with little kids and their moms, but that was more about not being able to swim laps and relax in peace and quiet than anything else.

I felt so good today in the water, so carefree, that from now on, I’m going to put all of the negative thoughts out of my head (or at least relegate them to a small corner of my mind) and simply enjoy myself at the pool.

Oh, and for those of you wondering, here’s a rare picture of me in a bathing suit.  Usually I would never allow this kind of evidence to be documented, but I think it’s for the greater good.  This will now be known as the “Before” picture:

I’m going back out to the pool tomorrow.  So there, InnerFatGirl!!
