2014 – a new year, a fresh start full of new beginnings. 2014 is going to be MY year to shine.  I’m vowing here and now that I will reach my goal weight in 2014.  What an amazing accomplishment it will be! To achieve my goals, I’m going to focus on the basics – eating well, drinking lots of water, taking my vitamins and getting in 5 workouts a week. Sunday weigh-ins will keep me accountable through the weekend. My resolution throughout the year is to keep focused while enjoying all the “newness” in my life. My Sunday progress updates will be called New Year, New ME Weigh-Ins.

Week 32 was my second one on Winter Break, and again, I enjoyed it to the fullest.  This week was a great combination of relaxing, getting out and about, and hitting some milestones. Oh, and there was also an unfortunate hair incident, but we’ll get to that in a while.

So, what did the scale show?!

When I weighed in this morning, I was 199.2, which is a loss of 1.8 pounds this week, and a loss of 77.8 lbs since surgery! I’ve lost a total of 115.8 pounds from my highest weight!!  I think most of you have read by now that on New Year’s Eve day I hit Onederland!!! It was so fantastic to reach that goal this week.  Then, of course, came NYE evening, and I definitely indulged and was up a bit on the scale for a couple of days, but I’m happy to be back down (and a bit below what I was on Tuesday).  It feels great every time I get on that scale and see the 1 in front of the numbers.  I have about 49 pounds to go to my goal weight, which is something I seriously can’t believe.  (From now on I’m going to start logging how many pounds to go to that goal, too).

I finally caught up on a bunch of blog posts that I wanted to write, which made me feel really good going into this 2nd semester of the school year.  One of the things that I want to make sure to do in this new year is to get out and about so that I have plenty of things to post about on this blog.  My social life has been pretty active lately with friends, and you might’ve read that I have a coffee date later this week with a guy I met on Match. Another “bloggy” thing I need to get much better about is reading my blogging buddies posts.  I just need to commit to the time, because I really enjoy reading everyone’s posts and I love commenting, too.

One not so great thing that happened this week was a very bad haircut. You can read the deets on the post, but I will say that going through that experience really showed me how far I’ve come in terms of my self esteem.  I’ve always thought of myself as a confident person, which I have been. But since losing weight, I feel beautiful about my body, which is something I haven’t felt before.  I like seeing my small waist, and don’t mind my bigger hips & thighs, because the hourglass is finally more proportioned.  The terrible haircut brought me back to the way I felt about myself all the time when I was morbidly obese, and I hated reliving that.  The other getting the bad cut did was forced the change that I think was inevitable.  I loved J’s personality, style, and manner when she did my keratin treatment, and I think subconsciously I knew I would eventually make the change to start seeing her as my main stylist.  So, while I wish I hadn’t had to go through this hair drama, I guess the end result is a great one. J is going to be my new stylist, and I’m so glad.

I hit a bit of a milestone in fitness week.  I started C25K, Week 5, Day 1, which had 5min run/3min walk intervals.  I did it with no problem, and felt good about the pace I was running (4.5mph, which is slow for most, but great for me right now, although I do want to get faster with time). I saw that Week 5, Day 2 jumped to an 8-minute run, and I made the decision that I was done with C25K.  I’ve read quite a bit about the benefits of run/walk intervals, and I have no real desire to run continuously.  My dad has bad knee problems (3 orthroscopic surgeries, and 1 knee replacement), and years of obesity hasn’t helped strengthen my knees.  Right now I feel absolutely no pain or even discomfort with my intervals, and I don’t really want to push it.  So, I think I’ve graduated from C25K.  I still want to do intervals, though, so on the advice of a friend, I bought a Gymboss interval timer.

2014-01-05 20.50.58 You can see that I’ve set it for 4 intervals of 5/3 splits.  I did it for the first time today, and it went really well.  I feel strong during the running portions, and although I’m not quite ready to move faster just yet, I can see that coming little by little.  I have the Hot Chocolate 5K in San Francisco next Sunday with FaveCousin and a friend, and I can’t wait to see if I can get a new PR.

Week 31 was wonderful – I had the week off, celebrated Christmas with family, and spent the rest of the week doing anything I wanted: read a delightful book, completed C25K Week 4, shopped till I dropped. The week couldn’t have been more perfect.

So, what did the scale show?!

When I weighed in this morning, I was 201, which is a loss of 1.2 pounds this week, and a loss of 76 lbs since surgery! I’ve lost a total of 114 pounds from my highest weight!!  I have 2 pounds to go to hit my goal of 199 by December 31st – so close to my Onderland goal, but that’s only 3 days away.  It’s possible, and I’m going to do everything I can to hit it.  Which means: lots of protein, keeping carbs low, plenty of water, and exercise. (And in all seriousness, if I hit Onederland anytime in the next week, I’ll be extremely thrilled.  But still, I have a goal in mind and I want to try to get there if at all possible).

bookcover-THEORY I’ve been terrible about finding time to read this year, so one of the things I wanted to make sure to do was to read Allison Winn Scotch’s newest book, The Theory of Opposites. This is perfect book for the dawn of a new year. I’ve always enjoyed Allison Winn Scotch’s writing, but this is my favorite of her books, by far. Excellent message about fate & free will. Loved it!

This week I completed Week 4 of C25K, which had me running for 5 minutes at a time, and a totaling 16 minutes of running out of 31 minutes.  Tomorrow I’m starting Week 5, which has intervals of 3 minutes of walking and 5 minutes of running, repeated for 31 minutes. I’m excited about this coming week because those are the types of intervals that I can see myself keeping up with in an actual 5K, and maybe even longer.  I know the point of the C25K is to get to the point of running for an entire 5K, but I’ve been reading and hearing so much about intervals and how you can actually go faster with less risk of injury, that I think I may just keep it at this level.  We’ll see.

Yesterday my mom and I went shopping at Macy’s and had the best time! My parents were really generous and had given me a $350 gift card.  I spent $50 on some Mac makeup, bought lots of clothes, and still have some money to spend.  Here’s what I got:

Bali Active by ChampionFirst and foremost, I needed new sports bras because all the ones I have are way too big.  Since I’m still losing weight, I didn’t want to invest in a really expensive sports bra, because within a few months (or sooner) it won’t fit anyway.  So when I found these Bali Active by Champion bras for $38 each, which were on sale buy 2, get 2 free (and then I had a $15 off  coupon!), I had to get them.  I love the sizing: 34-36 D-DD, because I am in-between right now. They fit me really well, and are very comfortable, and I like that they’re underwire, because I need it. When I jogged in place in the fitting room, the bra was really supportive, too. So I got 4 great sports bras for $60, which is the price you could pay for one expensive sports bra.

These next tops are ones that I needed for “after school” and on weekends.  Casual tops that have a little more style than tshirts, but are just as comfortable.

I’d say that was a successful shopping trip, wouldn’t you?  And I still have $100 to spend in the future. Woot!

Shopping for new clothes is fun, but this was the first time I’d ever been able to buy tops in the “normal” section of Macy’s, so it was a day I’ll never forget.  I’m not going to buy any more clothes until I go down in sizes; I have some great pieces, which I’m going to enjoy wearing.

I’m looking at this time of year as a Countdown to Christmas – focusing on my weight loss and achieving my goal of hitting ONDERLAND before the end of 2013. Achieving that will be the best gift of all!!! Sunday weigh-ins will keep me accountable through the weekend.  This is the time of year when food and celebrations are plentiful and the last thing on most people’s minds is weight loss.  I’m going to show that weight loss can happen during the holiday season. My Sunday progress updates will be called Countdown to Christmas Weigh-Ins.

Week 30 was packed! Tons of grading, finals, and finishing everything up before my two-week Winter Break.  Not to mention, trying to get things organized for Christmas and keeping up with my workouts.

So, what did the scale show?!

When I weighed in this morning, I was 202.2, which is a loss of 0.8 pounds this week, and a loss of 74.8 lbs since surgery! I’ve lost a total of 112.8 pounds from my highest weight!!  This loss isn’t stellar, but it is a loss, and it does reflect my efforts this week:

  • I did great with my workouts – continued C25K training (more on that in a minute) and got two other workouts in, for a total of 5 workouts during this busy week.  That fact alone is something I’m really proud of because last year at this time all workouts were out the window.
  • I can definitely improve on two fronts – getting enough water in and nighttime snacking.  Some days I got plenty of water in, but most days I’d only had 4-6 glasses, which just isn’t enough.  I definitely believe that water intake has a big effect on my weight loss and overall bodily functions.  The snacking at night is something I need to curb – I track all the snacks and was still within my normal 900-ish calories a day, but it’s the habit itself that needs to go.  Eating later like that doesn’t work well for my weight loss.  Plus, giving in to cravings isn’t a road I want to go down.  I’m never hungry after dinner, so I need to avoid the snacks and have a cup of tea (which will help my water intake, too).

One reason I’m looking forward to this break is fitting in my workouts with ease.  I have lots of fun, new classes I’m planning to take, and I’ll write about those as I do them.  C25K has been going really well, and after my Santa Run, I completed the other two days in strong form.  I ran for the entire 3-minute runs without much issue.  I just had to keep my mind strong and make sure I had great music playing and I did it!  This week includes the 3-minute runs that I’ve conquered, and then amps the time up to 5-minute runs.   The C25K app I use shows that I’ll be jogging half a 5K this week!! That fact alone is enough to encourage me to do those 5-minute runs.  Wish me luck.

I still have my goal of getting to Onederland before the end of this year.  That’s 3.2 pounds in 10 days (including the 31st) and I know I can do it.  The challenge is going to be doing it with all the Christmas food and celebrations, but I’m not going to let that be an excuse.  I will enjoy the foods my family eats on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and be thankful for my VSG tool because it offers built-in portion control. And I’m also going to remember that we’re just talking about two meals, not two days of indulging.  One major thing I’m going to look at is the types of snacks I’m eating.  I’ve been having lots of nuts and nuts w/ craisins, dried blueberries, etc., which is fine for once in a while, but I can’t have them everyday.  The calorie/protein ratio is just too far off.  So I’m going to stick with snacks that have a higher protein count and lower calories.

My point is, I know exactly what I need to do, and if I want Onederland badly enough, I can get it.  It’s more important to me than any snack, any indulgence, any distraction.

Week 29 was busier than expected.  I ended up taking 4 rest days, two more than planned, but I am glad to say that I did do C25K week 2 twice.  I’m really enjoying it, and although it’s not easy, I love the way I feel as soon as I’m done with it and I see all that I’ve accomplished.  That’s what I’ve been feeling a lot this week – reflecting back on these past 29 weeks and realizing just how far I’ve come.

So, what did the scale show?!

When I weighed in this morning, I was 203.0, which is a loss of 2.4 pounds this week, and a loss of 74 lbs since surgery! I’ve lost a total of 112 pounds from my highest weight!!  When I see my weight loss total I have to admit, I’m a bit in awe.  30 weeks ago,  don’t think I really had any idea what this weight loss would mean to me.  I knew I’d lose weight, sure, and go down in sizes of clothes, and be able to move through the world easier, but I don’t think I knew how my life would change.

The changes have been subtle, like the way my collarbones show a bit more each day. Or the way my smile has improved as my dimples have become more prominent.  Or the how amazing it feels to sit in the chairs outside Starbucks and not have my hips/thighs hang over and through the sides of the chair.  And how I can cross one leg over the other.  Or how my eyes look bigger now that my cheeks aren’t as full.  And these are just the physical changes.

There are also the changes of not worrying about getting past people down the row of a movie theatre.  Or in the church pew this week as I watched my niece in the Christmas pageant.  Or not giving a second thought to the decision to walk to my parents house to spend some time with them yesterday morning, instead of getting in the car and driving over.  Losing all this weight has really made living my daily life so much better in ways that I never anticipated because I got so used to dealing with the girth, I guess.   I’m so grateful that I’m able to appreciate all of these changes and recognize how far I’ve come.

I still have quite a ways to go, but I do feel like the momentum has shifted, and I’m on the downhill side of my weight loss journey.  My next major goal is right around the corner – hitting Onederland (getting to 199 or less).  I have four more pounds  and two more Sunday weigh-ins to get to that goal. Although, let’s be honest, I’m giving myself until the 31st, so if it means weighing in on that Tuesday morning and seeing 199, I’ll do it.

This week is finals week at school, and while the students are going to be stressed, it actually means I have a bit more time on my hands, because we have three days of a modified schedule.  I’ll be done at 12:30 Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.  Of course, I’ll spend plenty of time grading in the afternoon, but it will be nice to be able to hit the gym earlier than usual and then go back to paperwork, if I have to.  And the best part is those luxurious two weeks off with all that free time to spend with family, friends, and myself.  Lots to look forward to!

Week 28 was back to work, and as busy as this time of year can be.  We have one more week before finals, so things seem to be running at a fever-pitch.  Lots of meetings, collaborations, and grading to do.  I did fit in volunteering at Second Harvest Food bank with a group of colleagues, which made me feel great about giving a little bit back.  This week also brought the fruits of all of my online shopping in the form of the packages of gifts arriving at my doorstep.  So fun!  With all of this going on, I’m really proud of the fact that I fit in all of my workouts, too.

So, what did the scale show?!

When I weighed in this morning, I was 205.4, which is a loss of 1.6 pounds this week, and a loss of 71.6 lbs since surgery! I’ve lost a total of 109.6 pounds from my highest weight!! Another good loss this week.  The weather has turned quite chilly around here, which does make me want to “hibernate,” and eat more comfort foods.  I tried to find a balance of eating some rich and creamy soups, coupled with protein-packed salads. The other saving grace lately has been tea in the evenings.  I’ve become obsessed with David’s Tea, and if you took a peek in my cupboard, you’d think I was running the tea shop out of my kitchen.  Lately my favorite flavors are Gingerbread, Sleigh Ride, and Sweet Dreams. Because they’re all caffeine free, they help me get to my water goals, and they help keep me warm.  The sweetness of the teas also satisfies that nighttime sweets craving that sometimes kicks in.

This week I move to C25K Week 2, and in fact, I’m heading to the gym in a little while to complete Day 1.  Now that the days are shorter and it gets dark so much earlier, I’m so glad that the gym is an option for me to keep up with my training.  Today will be the first time I do the C25K on the treadmill, so we’ll see how that compares to the outdoor track that I’ve gotten used to.  I also want to fit in a few more classes, which I’ve gotten out of the habit of.  Here’s what I’m thinking for my workout plan:

Sunday: C25K, Week 2 Day 1
Monday: Rest Day (quick walk with Sofi)
Tuesday: C25K, Week 2 Day 2
Wednesday: Turbo Kick***
Thursday: C25K, Week 2 Day 3
Friday: Rest Day (getting the keratin treatment to my hair!!)
Saturday: Long walk with Sofi
Sunday: Santa Run 5K – I’m planning to do Week 3 Day 1

***The last time I took the Turbo Kick class, I was way out of my depth.  I stayed for the entire class, but I was huffing and puffing, and I wasn’t doing half the intensity that everyone else was.  I can’t wait to see how different the experience is this time.

This week I’m going to be doing a few things that will push me to new limits that I’ve never attempted before.  I know I’m going to be challenged, but I’m also going to be so proud.

Week 27 was a fun one because I had the entire week off with lots of plans.  I watched my 49ers win on Monday Night Football, got a cute blowout at DryBar, participated in the Turkey Trot, enjoyed a family Thanksgiving, started C25K and felt good out on the track, got all of my Christmas shopping done from the comfort of my home on Black Friday, saw The Book Thief (go see it!), and started decorating the house for Christmas.  Whew!  Action packed!!

So, what did the scale show?!

When I weighed in this morning, I was 207.0, which is a loss of 1.6 pounds this week, and a loss of 70 lbs since surgery! I’ve lost a total of 108 pounds from my highest weight!! I’m really happy with this loss, because it shows that even during a holiday week, where my normal routine was completely off AND where eating is the focal point, I can lose weight. I’m also really impressed that I’ve lost 70 pounds in just 6 1/2 months! I’ve never seen this much sustained success on the scale EVER before in my life.  Even in those times in the past when I’ve lost a significant amount of weight, I’ve never been as sure as I am right now that I WILL NOT GAIN IT BACK.  It’s not just the sleeve that makes me confident, it’s the fact that I’ve really changed my whole mindset around eating, exercising, and what I want out of life.  I still enjoy food, but it’s not as difficult to make healthy choices as it used to be.

For example, last night my parents, sister, and I went out to Outback for dinner before we saw The Book Thief.  My parents had ordered a really delicious appetizer – the crab & avocado stack:

crab-and-avocado-stackAs you can see, it was served with chips, but I didn’t even hesitate to pass those up and eat the crab and avocado with my fork instead.  That way, I got to enjoy the full flavors of the food without adding extra calories, sodium, and fat that the chips would have brought.  It’s a little change, but one that adds up throughout a day.  (The crab and avocado stack was a-mazing, and I’m planning on re-creating it at home because I really loved it).

This week my focus is going to be getting myself closer to my goal of hitting Onederland by the end of this year.  That’s 30 days to lose 8 pounds, and I think it’s a very attainable goal. I know that if I keep my protein and water intake high, keep my carbs low, and keep up with my exercising, I’ll hit 199 on the scale by December 31.

Autumn has arrived! Which means that life is back to normal – school’s in, my schedule is busy, and obligations abound. But I won’t use those as excuses to slack on my goals. The great thing about fall is that the weather is cooler, which means that those wonderful fall fashions will keep me motivated. Plus, crisp temperatures mean that it’s never “too hot” to workout. I’m going to relish my nightly cup of steaming hot tea as another way to keep my water intake up. I look forward to all those hearty, satisfying and wls-friendly soups, stews, and crockpot meals that I’ll create for myself. This year, the changing season will mark new milestones that I haven’t seen in 5, 7, 10+ years! Bring on fall 2013 – it’s time to reach new heights! Week 26 brought celebrations – my 6-month post op appt and my 6-month surgiversary. Looking back on these past 6 months, I am so thankful for my sleeve and my new lifestyle. I’ve worked hard for all that I’ve achieved, and I have a lot to be proud of.  Lots of things making me smile. This is the last of my Fabulous Fall weigh-ins; next week marks the start of my Countdown to Christmas weigh-ins.

So, how’s the scale looking?

When I weighed in this morning, I was 208.6, which is a loss of 2.4 pounds this week, and a loss of 68.4 lbs since surgery! I’ve lost a total of 106.4 pounds from my highest weight!!  A great loss this week, and I can hardly believe that I’m less than 10 pounds away from being in Onderland!  My main focus over these next few weeks before the close of 2013 is going to be making it to 199 or less.  I know I can do it.

This week, since I’m off, I have more freedom to experiment with my workouts.  Tomorrow I’m going to head to the track and try Day 1, Week 1 C25K again.  I’ve been jogging here and there on my walks (never more than a half a block at a time), but I’ve just been taking it slowly, and I’m not too winded.  Yesterday when I tried it on my walk with my sis, niece, and the pups, my sister said I looked like I was “tip-toeing through the tulips” as I was jogging.  She said I looked like I was skipping, and as if I should’ve been tossing flower petals to my left and right.  LOL. I’m sure it was nothing that graceful, but still, I felt pretty good as I went, and I’m interested in pushing myself a bit more.  I’ll definitely report back on how it goes. Who knows, maybe I’ll spend part of the Turkey Trot on Thursday jogging.

The other thing I really need to do this week is buy some casual clothes.  I have almost nothing to wear after work or on the weekends, which is why I spend so much of my time at home in my pjs.  Nothing wrong with that, but I would like to have a few more options, so I’m heading to Marshall’s to see what I can find.  I’ve never bought clothes at Marshall’s before because their plus size selection stinks, so this is going to be another NSV.  I’ll make sure to post if I find anything good.

I’m so happy with the way that my life is going right now.  This weight loss isn’t easy, but it is manageable.  The hard work and commitment that I put in on a daily basis is showing up on the scale, and I really can’t ask for more than that.  It’s what I wanted all along when I was struggling for all those years – for my efforts to show up.  Now that they finally are, I couldn’t be more grateful and more pleased.  I’m doing it – I’m creating the new me.

Autumn has arrived! Which means that life is back to normal – school’s in, my schedule is busy, and obligations abound. But I won’t use those as excuses to slack on my goals. The great thing about fall is that the weather is cooler, which means that those wonderful fall fashions will keep me motivated. Plus, crisp temperatures mean that it’s never “too hot” to workout. I’m going to relish my nightly cup of steaming hot tea as another way to keep my water intake up. I look forward to all those hearty, satisfying and wls-friendly soups, stews, and crockpot meals that I’ll create for myself. This year, the changing season will mark new milestones that I haven’t seen in 5, 7, 10+ years! Bring on fall 2013 – it’s time to reach new heights! Sunday weigh-ins will keep me accountable through the weekend, and will give me a positive goal to begin each new week. Throughout the fall, I’ll be giving Sunday progress updates called Fabulous Fall Weigh-Ins.

Week 25 went quickly with Monday’s holiday, but also because the days seem to fly by at this time of year, don’t they?  Wednesday marks my 6-month surgiversary, and I go for my 6-month post-op appointment tomorrow.  I’m looking forward to getting the results of the bloodwork I did a few weeks ago.  (I actually got my labs back a few days after I went in to have the blood drawn, but I really can’t make heads or tails of it, so I’m very interested to hear what the doctor tells me).

So, how’s the scale looking?

When I weighed in this morning, I was 211.0, which is a loss of 0.8 pounds this week, and a loss of 66 lbs since surgery! I’ve lost a total of 104 pounds from my highest weight!!  Even though this week’s loss isn’t even 1 pound, I’m content with it.  I had fairly large losses the past two weeks, so it’s probably time for a smaller loss.  Also, last week I weighed in on Monday, so this was a slightly shorter week.  And really, any loss is a good loss, right?

This past week was one in which I was reminded just how far I’ve come. I’m still amazed when I go into a store and can try on regular sizes – given how much I like clothes, the thrill never gets old.  The most difficult part is not overbuying because I know that the sizes I fit into now will only work for a short time; soon enough I’ll be smaller.  That’s an incredible realization.  I definitely need to start going to stores like  TJMaxx and Marshalls to get some “filler” items that are inexpensive.  And I do take comfort in the fact that these “temporary” clothes will end up in a good home when I donate them.

Beyond just looking better, this weight loss has really transformed the way I feel, too.  At one point this week I had to walk up a couple of flights of stairs to get to my car in the parking lot, and I did it without getting out of breath at all.  In the past, those stairs would’ve been a struggle and I would’ve done everything I could to mask the fact that I was huffing and puffing. And when I’m walking, whether it’s with Sofi or in a 5K, I am constantly pushing to go a bit faster to feel more challenged.  I’m doing a Turkey Trot 5K on Thanksgiving morning, and since it’s going to be my first solo 5K, I think I’m going to push myself to see just how fast I can go.  I love all these physical barriers that I’m breaking down and surpassing even what I expected would be possible.

This week’s quote is perfect because WLS isn’t a magic pill.  There’s such a misconception out there that once a person has surgery, s/he will automatically lose weight.  And while initially someone might lose weight without much effort, that period doesn’t last long.  It takes a complete change in mindset. It takes making this a lifestyle, not a quick fix.  It takes hard work, organization, and persistence.  It takes making choices that are nutritionally healthy for me when other foods might be easier. It takes planning meals daily.  It takes logging every bite. It takes moving my body and working up a sweat, which gets more difficult the thinner I get.  It takes time and dedication.  And I wouldn’t change one thing, because I’m loving all that it takes.

Week 24 was a fun week filled with lots of walks, a few NSVs, and of course, weight loss. (This post is a day late because I spent Saturday night/Sunday morning at FaveCousin’s house to do the Mermaid 5K and I didn’t have my own scale.  So, the weigh-in was postponed a day).

So, how’s the scale looking?

When I weighed in this morning, I was 211.8, which is a loss of 2 pounds this week, and a loss of 65.2 lbs since surgery! I’ve lost a total of 103.2 pounds from my highest weight!!  I’m really happy that I had a nice loss this week, especially since I lost almost four pounds last week.  This week I ate more carbs than normal, but because most of those carbs were from things like oatmeal and lentils I’m not too worried about it.  But I do want to get back to my morning protein shakes this coming week – nothing helps me meet my protein goals like those do.

This week brought a few NSVs:

  • I had to buy new jeans because the ones I was wearing are all too big and baggy.  So on Friday afternoon, I bought size 18s from Avenue, which is exciting because in the past I’ve always found Avenue jeans to require a size larger than I can wear in other pants. Buying smaller sizes is always exciting, but it’s really weird to think that I was in a size 28 last year at this time.  I can’t quite comprehend that I’m wearing size 18s – the last time I recall wearing this size was at least 20 years ago.
  • When FaveCousin and I went to sushi on Saturday night, we were at a really small hole-in-the-wall sushi restaurant in the Richmond District of SF.  The tables were all really close together. Normally, I would’ve been very concerned that I was taking up too much space compared to the people in the chairs behind me, but I when I looked behind me, I realized there was plenty of space.  And when we got up to leave, I had no problem scooting my chair back and making my way into the aisle.  This was one of those huge, yet quiet moments that only big girls/guys could truly understand.
  • The entire experience of the Mermaid 5K yesterday was an NSV for me.  Night and day to the last one I completed, back in March of 2009.  I’ve come a long way, baby!

Today’s quote is really important to me because I’m moving into completely new territory in my journey.  I’m hitting numbers on the scale and wearing sizes that I don’t remember seeing in the last 18 years.  I’m accomplishing things that seemed so far out of reach just a year ago, and now I’m thinking of bigger goals than I ever thought possible.  Recently I was reminded to enjoy each step along this journey, and not just focus on the end goal.  I can honestly say that I am living in the moment, enjoying the gifts that each new day brings, and loving the life I’m creating.

Week 23 brought with a huge milestone, so rather than write about how my week was, let’s just get to the numbers!

So, how’s the scale looking?

When I weighed in this morning, I was 213.8, which is a loss of 3.8 pounds this week, and a loss of 63.2 lbs since surgery! I’ve lost a total of 101.2 pounds from my highest weight!!  What a week! I lost almost 4 pounds and hit the “century mark” – 100 pounds lost!! I’m so proud of myself and all that I’ve done to get here.  It’s been a lot of hard work, but achieving this goal within the time period that I set for myself is really amazing.

Today a couple of my friends and I are going to one of my favorite wineries, Testarossa, to celebrate my weight loss.  I know it might seem antithetical to go drink wine to celebrate losing weight, but I think it makes perfect sense.  My life is about balance, and part of that is enjoying celebrations in moderation.

Losing this weight has let me buy some new clothes, and I can’t wait to wear my new size XL shirt when we go today!  I know a size XL isn’t something most women would be excited about fitting into, but considering that at one point last fall I was wearing size 26/28 sweaters, this is very significant for me.

The other 100-pounds lost celebration I have planned is a bike ride with friends in a couple of weeks.  I also wanted to make sure that we did something active to celebrate this milestone, and one of my all-time favorite activities is bike riding.  So we’ll be heading to the Los Gatos Creek Trail to go bike riding for a few hours.  Since more of my friends are able to make this excursion, it will be a really fun day.  I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn’t rain.

Speaking of bike riding, my reward for meeting this goal is to buy myself a new, red beach cruiser.  I’m going to take my time looking around to find the right bike, and I’ll buy it within the next few months.  I’ll definitely post it as soon as I get it home.

I really like today’s quote because it speaks directly about my own journey.  Losing 100+ pounds isn’t a miracle that just happened.  I manifested it through sweat, preparation, planning, and follow-through.  It took years of perseverance and belief in myself.  It was born from daily choices.  And while I’m as grateful for this weight loss (and my VSG surgery) as I would be for any miracle, I know that I earned it.
